HAMMOND, Ind. – The Purdue University Calumet softball team will host St. Francis University Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. (CT) at Dowling Park, before traveling to St. Xavier for a twinbill in Chicago, Ill. on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. (CT).
LAST TIME OUT
The Purdue University Calumet softball team came away with a two-game league sweep on the road Purdue North Central Wednesday, winning 4-3 and 8-1 – the second game going nine innings.
Junior Samantha Oppenhuis (Munster, Ind./Illiana Christian) led the way for the Peregrines (20-21, 9-7 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) at the plate, finishing 4-for-6 with a double, RBI and a run across the two games. Teammate Sydney Schmitt (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) had a huge Game 2, going 2-for-5 with a double and four RBI.
Carly Murphy (Munster, Ind./Munster) picked up both W’s on the day, pitching all seven innings in the Game 1 win and coming on relief for the final two in the nine-inning Game 2 victory.
SCOUTING THE FIGHTING SAINTS
Sara Braden leads the Fighting Saints offensively, batting .447 with 37 RBI and 12 runs scored while Ally Balandis is batting .367 with a team-high eight homers and 38 runs scored. In the circle, USF is led by Morghan Dieringer, who owns a 1.85 ERA and a 13-6 record.
SCOUTING THE COUGARS
Saint Xavier is led by Brittany Plimmer, who has a team-high .417 batting average, 36 RBI, five home runs and 30 runs scored. In the circle, the Cougars are led by Nicole Nonnemacher, who owns a 1.03 ERA and 19-1 record with 275 strikeouts on the season.
Freshman catcher Olivia Sardella leads the Peregrines at the plate with a .346 batting average, 25 RBI and 13 doubles while Alex Morales adds a .314 batting average, 21 RBI and 27 runs scored. Carly Murphy headlines the pitching staff with a 2.49 ERA in 24 appearances in the circle and holds an 11-9 record.
The Peregrines hold a 4-3 advantage in the all-time series against the Fighting Saints, with USF winning the last meeting, 2-0, in the CCAC playoffs last season. The Black and Gold last defeated the Fighting Saints on April 17, last season, when they came away with the 7-3 win at the St. Francis Tournament last season.
St. Xavier holds a 3-1 advantage over the Peregrines in the all-time series, with the Peregrines last defeating the Cougars on April 25, 2014, thanks to a stellar pitching performance from Alison Kimble who led the Peregrines to a 1-0 victory.
