HAMMOND, Ind. & WESTVILLE, Ind. – The Purdue University Northwest athletics department was highlighted by many firsts, school records and other academic and athletic success during the 2017-18 season.

#9: Women's XC Takes First, Cordova Places 1st Overall at PNW Classic
The Purdue Northwest women’s cross country team finished with 26 team points, which helped them win the PNW Classic in their second meet of the 2017 season. Salvador Cordova led the way for the men’s team and captured the title with a time of 26:59. Overall the team finished with 39 total points finishing second in the competition.
#10: Plummer, Picken Finish In Top 10 to Lead PNW Men’s Golf at GLIAC Championship
Junior Jacob Plummer (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria Community) finished the three-day tournament with a 222 (74, 76, 72) after shooting a 72 to finish in a tie for seventh place overall on the final day to lead the Purdue Northwest men’s golf team at the three-round 2018 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship at The Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio. The Pride finished in sixth place in the 11-team field with a three-day total team score of 918 (308, 313, 297).
Junior Chase Picken (Manito, Ill./Midwest Central) also finished in the top 10 for PNW as he finished ninth place in the field of 55 golfers after shooting his round high 73 to bring his total score to 224 (75, 76, 73).
#11: Purdue Northwest Athletics Unveils Lalaeff & Fischer Golf Training Center
Holding a luncheon and ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the special occasion, Purdue Northwest Athletics was pleased to unveil its new Lalaeff & Fischer PNW Golf Training Center Friday afternoon at the Fitness & Recreation Center on its Hammond campus. The 800-square foot indoor golf center features five types of synthetic turf with surfaces for putting, chipping, pitching and full swings as well as two large TV screens to utilize enhanced launch monitor technology, video analysis and Ground Reaction Force (GRF) technology.
#12: Purdue Northwest Athletics Records 3.28 GPA During Fall Semester
For the third straight semester, the Purdue University Northwest Athletics Department has surpassed its collective grade-point average when the Fall 2017 academic report was recently released. With over 200 PNW student-athletes contributing, the Pride posted a new benchmark semester grade-point average of 3.28.
In addition, PNW Athletics had 27 of its student-athletes boast a perfect 4.0 GPA, nearly doubling its total of 14 from the Spring 2017 semester. In fact, 75 percent recorded at least a 3.0 GPA.
#13: PNW’s Cordova Named National Semifinalist for Wooden Cup
Purdue Northwest men’s cross country senior standout Salvador Cordova (Hammond, Ind./Bishop Noll) was named one of 25 national semifinalists for The Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup presented by Athletes for a Better World (ABW) when the national organization announced the award committee’s selections. To be nominated for the Wooden Cup, an athlete must exemplify strong character and leadership both on and off the field in addition to making worthwhile contributions to sport and society.
#14: Purdue Northwest Athletics Pays Special Tribute to John Friend
In a formal dinner and ceremony at Purdue Northwest’s Fitness & Recreation Center, the PNW Pride paid a special tribute to one of its long-time athletic administrators, John Friend. During the ceremony that included nearly 200 of Friend’s family, friends and colleagues, the University also officially announced the naming of its Fitness & Recreation court as “John Friend Court” and bestowed upon Friend the title of Director of Athletics Emeritus.
#15: Flessner Named NCBWA Division II National Pitcher of the Week
Just three days after earning the program’s first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Baseball Pitcher of the Week honor, Purdue Northwest junior Kyle Flessner (Thomasboro, Ill./Kankakee CC/Rantoul Township) made history again.
