Pride Outpace Cardinals in Doubleheader Sweep

HAMMOND, Ind. – The Purdue Northwest baseball team picked up a pair of wins Saturday as they closed out a series win over the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals at Dowling Park. The Pride won the first game 3-1, and closed out the weekend with a 3-2 victory over SVSU.

GAME ONE
After dropping the second game of the series Friday afternoon, the Pride were eager to avenge and re-take the advantage in the series. Anthony Agne got things started in the second inning, as his triple down the right-field line brought sophomore Kevin McCune home for the first run of the day. A wayward flyball in right field allowed John Cory to get his first triple of the season and scored Agne doubling the PNW lead to 2-0.

The Cardinals struck back quickly as Austin Koin scored as the result of an error at SS allowing Jordan Swiss to reach base, making the score 2-1.

The Pride added some insurance in the bottom of the fourth, as Michael Woods grounded out allowing McCune to come across for his second run of the game.

Chad Patrick once again unleashed an impressive performance, as he went the complete game, tossing six innings with six hits and just one run allowed while striking out six Cardinals. Patrick is now 3-3 on the season as he recovered from a rough outing at Davenport in his last time out.

GAME TWO
Brandon Haczynski got the nod in game two, and he continued what has been an impressive sophomore campaign. Anthony Agne once again came through in the second inning as he singled past the SVSU shortstop allowing Kevin McCune to come across. The bottom half of the lineup provided an intriguing amount of production for PNW on the day.

Saginaw Valley took its first lead of the game in the following half as they amassed two runs, first on a fielders’ choice which once again brought home Swiss, and a sacrifice fly allowing Craig Wilson Jr. to step on home.

The Black and Gold would retaliate in the bottom of the fourth as Agne notched his third RBI of the day, all of which resulted in a run for Kevin McCune. The SVSU shortstop attempted to make a tough play and was unable to come up with the ball.

PNW’s winning run came in the bottom of the sixth, as a timely passed ball allowed freshman Ray Hilbrich to score and secure a 3-2 Pride lead. The Pride closed out the final three outs and PNW now take their third series victory in conference play as they climb to 12-8.

PNW returns to action Tuesday, April 23 as the Pride travel to the University of Indianapolis to take on the Greyhounds starting at noon CT.
