HAMMOND, Ind. & WESTVILLE, Ind. – The Purdue University Northwest Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) reached its goal during the 2018-19 academic year, raising over $4,400 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This was a 33 percent increase from last year.
PNW student-athletes across all 13 sports participated in volleyball, dodgeball, basketball and soccer tournaments as well as hosted the Chick-Fil-A Softie Ball Toss – a new event held during basketball halftimes.
SAAC members also organized Miracle Minutes, minute-long pursuits to gain as much money as possible from the stands during the men’s and women’s basketball games.
“I am so proud of the effort that the SAAC and student athletes have given to the Make-A-Wish Foundation,” said PNW Interim Senior Woman Administrator and Head Volleyball Coach Julie Wiejak. “It is an amazing organization that we are thrilled to partner with and we look forward to raising even more money in the future to grant a wish!”
This year’s SAAC had 30 dedicated members from across the athletic department who helped with planning events on campus and engaging in others. SAAC will continue to make an impact on the surrounding community and hopes to exceed goals in raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation during the 2019-20 academic year.
NCAA Division II has a long-standing relationship with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization that grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. The Division II SAAC established the Make-A-Wish partnership in 2003 and has since become one of the foundations' largest and most consistent contributors, raising more than $4.7 million for the organization. In 2017-18, the annual total raised for Make-A-Wish from across Division II was $474,000.
