HAMMOND, Ind. & WESTVILLE, Ind. – Coming into the program’s first season as a full member of NCAA Division II, Purdue Northwest cross country coach Austin Warner has announced the addition of 15 incoming student-athletes as the 2019 recruiting class.
“I am really eager to get started this season with this particular recruiting class. Many of these incomers come from well-respected prep programs in the area and other parts of the Midwest that will make an immediate impact on the program. This is by far the largest and most talented recruiting class in program history for the women while the five incoming men are joining a team that is returning seven of our top 8 runners from the 2018 season to add to our depth.”
The PNW men's cross country team adds three newcomers to the squad this season and coach Warner is excited about his incoming class.
Jacob Corbett comes to Purdue Northwest from New Prairie High School located in New Carlisle, Indiana. In his final cross country season, Corbett qualified for the IHSA State XC Championships his senior season running a personal best of 16:21. On the oval, Corbett won both the 1600m and 3200m IHSA Regional titles and boasts personal bests of 4:17 (1600m) and 9:20 (3200m)
O’Connor was a varsity cross country/track and field athlete who qualified for the IHSA XC Championships on three different occasions. In his senior campaign, Nathan ran a personal best of 16:28 in which he led the Chesterton Trojans to an IHSAA XC Regional title. O’Connor holds a personal best of 10:06 in the 3200m event on the oval.
Eric Alegre(Highland) Mitch Buffano(Munster) andMatthew Zmija(Portage) are three quality additions to the men’s roster that return seven of the top runners from the 2018 squad. These three athletes competed at the varsity level in both cross country/track and field and have competed at IHSAA Semi-State/IHSA State Championships in cross country.
The women's program brings ten stellar additions as they look to improve from last years finish at the GLIAC Championship.
Janssen comes to Purdue Northwest from Beecher High School in Beecher, Illinois. Hailey earned IHSA All-State honors in both her cross country and track seasons. Janssen holds a personal best of 18:07 in the 3 mile distance. On the track, Janssen earned all-state honors in the both the 1600m and 3200m events where she holds personal bests of 5:15 and 11:25.
Christina comes to Purdue Northwest after a strong running career at Hobart High School in which she holds a personal best of 19:05 in the 5000m run/ Christina has ran this personal best on two separate occasions in the state series. Christina has qualified for the IHSAA State Championships and is a 4x IHSAA Semi-State Championships qualifier.
Holly Shaginaw was a distance standout at Hobart High School in Hobart, Indiana where she qualified for both the 2017 and 2018 IHSA State XC Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana. Holly holds a personal best of 19:15 in the 5000m where she finished 3rdoverall at the NCC XC Championships.
Daina is a well-rounded student-athlete from Lemont High School in Lemont, Illinois who intends to study Biology at PNW. Daina helped her team qualify for the IHSA Cross Country State Championships her senior season where they placed 18th. Daina holds a personal best of 19:25 in the 3 mile distance while running a 5:45 1600m personal best.
Claire is a distance student-athlete from Lowell High School located in Lowell, Indiana. Claire competed at the IHSAA State Cross Country Championships three times in her prep career for the Lady Red Devils while running a personal best of 19:56 PR in the 5000m distance and 5:42 in the 1600m. Mitsch intends to study computer science at PNW.
Morgan is an incoming student-athlete from East Troy, WI. Morgan was a varsity cross country/track and field athlete for East Troy High School who was a part of the 2016 WIAA D2 State Cross Country state championship team. Bartlett holds personal bests of 20:08 in the 5000m and 2:24 in the 800m run.
Megan was a decorated student-athlete at Morgan Township High School in Valparaiso, Indiana. At MTHS, Megan led her team to a PCC championship while also setting the school record time of 12:09 in the 3200m run. Megan holds personal bests of 20:45 in the 5000m event and was also a varsity soccer player at MTHS.
Virginia comes to PNW from Portage, Indiana and was a varsity cross country/track and field athlete for the Lady Indians. Meyer competed at the IHSAA XC Semi-State championships in both her junior and senior seasons holding a personal best of 20:25 in the 5000m. Virginia was coached in cross country by long-term head coach at PHS, Jay White.
Kristel is a distance athlete from Crown Point High School located in Crown Point, Indiana. Villarosa ran her personal best at the IHSAA State finals her senior year with a time of 20:46 where the Lady Bulldogs placed 22nd. Kristel was also part of the Lady Bulldogs squad that won the 2018 IHSAA Sectional XC Championship.
Hayley is also an incoming student-athlete from Lowell High School who intends to study Nursing at Purdue Northwest. Jenkins holds a personal best of 21:19 in the 5000m and 6:15 in the 1600m event. Hayley also has experience in the 100m and 300m hurdle events, which she competed for the Lady Devils in her last prep track and field season.
The Pride will start their season on September 6 when they will host the annual PNW Classic at the Westville campus.
