Baseball Defeats Lincoln Christian in DH Saturday

HAMMOND, Ind. – The Purdue University Northwest baseball team used strong pitching performances backed by a powerful offense to come away with a pair of wins over Lincoln Christian Saturday afternoon.

The Pride (2-0) kicked off its 2016-17 campaign in style, defeating the Red Lions (0-5) in the first game of the double-header 11-0, before coming away with the 12-1 victory in Game 2.

Game 1: Purdue Northwest 11, Lincoln Christian 0

Freshman pitcher Jordan Petty led the way for the Black and Gold on the mound in his first appearance for the Pride.

Petty finished with 12 strikeouts and pitched four innings of no-hit ball before allowing his first hit in the top of the fifth to Ted Lingle.

Junior hurler Jimmy Skiff would come in relief for Petty in the top half of the fifth, and would finish the game with five strikeouts to complete the combined one-hit shutout.

After a scoreless first inning by both teams, Purdue Northwest would put up a 6-run second inning, which started after a Mike Mikulich single brought in Andrew Atchison and Evan Bloomfield

The Red Lions would help out the Black and Gold with some fielding miscues, followed by an RBI-single from Austin Kordik which put PNW up 4-0.

Senior Tyler Crussen would keep the inning alive with a single that eventually brought in Kordik, followed by an RBI-single from Jake Lindeman, which brought in Crussen to cap off the 6-run second.

The Pride would tack on six more runs throughout the rest of the game to come away with the 12-0 victory.

Kordik, Lindeman, Bloomfield, Atchison, and Mikulich all led the Black and gold with two hits apiece, while Crussen and Larry Crisler each recorded hits for the Pride.

Game 2: Purdue Northwest 12, Lincoln Christian 1

The second game was much like the first, with Purdue Northwest scoring the bulk of their runs in the second inning.

Mikulich would start things off with an RBI-double, followed by an RBI-single from Jonny Albers to give the Pride an early 2-0 advantage.

After Alex Batistatos scored on a wild pitch, Kordik would drive in Zac Hernandez to extend their lead to four runs.

PNW capped off its 8-0 run with a two-run inside the park home run from Crisler which scored Lindeman.

The Red Lions would score their first run of the day in the top of the sixth inning, after Brock Trexler brought in Lance Warner to make it 11-1 in favor of the Pride.

Alec Skalka would connect on the second inside the park home run of the game, scoring the final run for the Pride and helping seal the 12-1 victory.

Junior Willie Bennett captured his first win of the season, allowing just one hit and striking out three in four innings of work.

Brody Kutch would come in relief and throw two innings striking out two while Fabian DelReal finished the game off with one strike out and allowing one hit.
