Miami Gardens, Fla. – Senior Jimmy Skiff (Dyer, Ind./Andrean) had an impressive start on the mound as the Purdue Northwest baseball team got its Florida trip off to a great start with a 7-5 road win over Florida Memorial University Sunday afternoon at Harry T. Moore Baseball Field in Miami Gardens, Fla. Skiff improved his season record to 2-0 after pitching the first five innings Sunday and allowing six hits, one run (earned) and no walks with three strikeouts.
Sophomore Hunter Thorn (Portage, Ind./Portage) got the Pride rolling early with a RBI single to centerfield in the top of the first inning. PNW went up 2-0 in the top of the second inning on a RBI groundout by senior Mike Mikulich (Hebron, Ind./Hebron) and freshman John Cory (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) added a two-run single in the third inning to push the lead to 4-0. Junior Larry Crisler (Gary, Ind./Snead State CC/Bishop Noll) hit a double to right field in the top of the fourth and freshman Kevin McCune (Munster, Ind./Andrean) brought him home with a RBI single up the middle to make it, 5-0.
The Lions scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth on a double play with the bases loaded after opening the frame with three straight singles. After a scoreless fifth inning, FMU’s Chris Clara hit a solo homer to bring the hosts within three runs, 5-2. An infield error by Florida Memorial in the top of the seventh helped Purdue Northwest score another run to extend its lead to 6-2, but the Lions got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run double by Sergio Chil to make the score, 6-4.
Junior Evan Finke (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) notched a RBI on an infield single in the eighth to complete the scoring for PNW, 7-4. FMU made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth scoring on a RBI single to left field by Clara and leaving runners at second and third base before junior Joe Davi (New Lenox, Ill./Joliet JC/Lincoln-Way Central) recorded the save (2) by getting the final batter to fly out to left field. Thorn, McCune, Finke and Cory each finished Sunday’s game with two hits apiece for the Pride. Crisler had two runs scored, while Cory led PNW with two RBI.
Purdue Northwest (4-1 overall) continues its Florida trip on Monday, March 12, with a road doubleheader against Warner University (Fla.). The first game of the pair begins at 12:30 p.m. CT at Royals Field in Lake Wales, Fla.
