AVE MARIA, Fla. -- Senior Austin Kordik (West Chicago, Ill./Community) had a pair of clutch hits at the plate as he went 2-5 including a two-run home run that tied the game and an RBI single that extended the lead as the Purdue Northwest baseball team defeated Ave Maria, 7-3, at Bowie's Ballpark, Sunday.
Starting pitcher Alex Batistatos (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) took no-decision as the junior threw 6.1 innings, scattered 10 hits, allowed three runs (all earned) and struck out two.
The Pride (2-3) struck first in the top of the second inning as junior Hunter Thorn (Portage, Ind./Portage) ripped an RBI double to center which scored Brett Veltema (Jenison, Mich./Jenison/Muskegon CC) to make it 1-0.
Ave Maria broke through in the seventh inning with a solo shot, a double and a sacrifice fly which led to three runs to put the Gyrenes ahead 3-1.
Sophomore Brandon Haczynski (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) came in to pitch for Batistatos in the seventh inning and shut Ave Maria down the rest of the way.
PNW had the answer in the top half of the eighth inning. After a Nick Albanese (Algonquin, Ill./Marian Central Catholic/Kankakee CC) single and stealing second, Kordik came up and smacked a long ball over the right field fence for his first home run of the season which tied it the score at 3.
The Pride was not done in that inning after junior Michael Woods (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove/Harper JC) singled and advanced to third on a wild pitch then Veltema gave the Pride a 4-3 lead with another RBI double to right field.
PNW was not done as the Pride added three more runs in the ninth inning. Sophomore John Cory (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) made it 5-3 with his RBI single up the middle.
Kordik continued his big day as the senior ripped an RBI double to right center that made the score 6-3. Junior Anthony Agne (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North/Joliet Junior College) expanded the lead to 7-3 with an RBI single.
Haczynski (1-1) picked up the victory in relief for the Pride, with his 2 1/3 innings of work, scattering three hits, did not allow a run and issuing one walk and striking out two.
PNW returns to action Monday, March 11 as the Pride travel to Warner University for a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m. CT.
