BABSON PARK, Fla. -- The Purdue University Northwest baseball team concluded their Florida Spring Trip on Thursday as the Pride lost both games of a doubleheader to Webber International.
The Warriors won the first game, 8-1, before defeating the Pride in the nightcap, 10-6, at Heart of Florida Field in Babson Park, Florida.
GAME 2: WIU 10, PNW 6
Webber put up a six-spot in the second inning to open up the game ahead 6-0.
PNW tried to slowly fight back into the game. The Pride made it a 6-1 game after junior Anthony Agne (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North/Joliet JC) ripped an RBI that scored sophomore Hunter Thorn (Portage, Ind./Portage).
The Pride got two more in the fifth inning to make it 6-3 after junior Nick Albanese (Algonquin, Ill./Marian Central Catholic/Kankakee CC) and freshman Ray Hilbrich (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to make it 6-3.
Webber added one run back in the bottom half to make it 7-3. PNW added two right back in the top of the sixth inning as senior Austin Kordik (West Chicago, Ill./Community) smoked a 2-run double scoring Agne and junior Danny Schneberger (Palatine, Ill./Palatine/Harper) to make 7-5.
The Warriors responded again with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to go ahead 10-5. Freshman Conner Hoffman (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) walked with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh to make it 10-6.
Freshman Garrett Wiggs (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) recorded the loss (0-2) on the mound for the Pride after throwing two innings, scattering four hits, allowing six runs (two earned) and striking out two.
Junior Alex Batistatos (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) threw two shutout innings in relief, did not allow a hit, issued a walk and struck out three.
GAME 1: WIU 8, PNW 1
Thorn put PNW on the scoreboard first in the opening frame with his RBI single to make it 1-0. After that, WIU scored eight unanswered runs.
Webber scored a run to tie it in the bottom half of the inning. The Warriors expanded their lead in the bottom of the second with three more runs in the frame to go ahead 4-1.
WIU expanded added to their lead in the third inning with another run to make it 5-1. For the fourth inning in a row, WIU put up a two-spot to make it 7-1.
The Warriors added one more in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 8-1. The score would stand as the Warriors defeated the Pride 8-1.
Senior Brendan Kelly (Grandville, Mich./Grandville/Muskegon CC) had the start on the mound for the Pride, picking up the loss (1-1), after throwing five innings, walked two and struck out three.
Senior Joe Davi (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central/Joliet JC) pitched the sixth frame and did not allow an earned run.
PNW has concluded their Florida Spring Trip and returns to action Thursday, March 21 as the Pride travel to St. Francis (Ill.) to take on the Saints starting at 3 p.m. CT. PNW begins Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday, March 22 as the Pride start a four-game series against Northwood beginning with a one-nine inning game starting at 3 p.m. CT.
