Baseball Drops Conference Opener to Northwood Friday

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Purdue University Northwest baseball team could not capitalize on key opportunities as the Pride lost their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener against Northwood, 4-1, Friday.

The Timberwolves (14-5, 1-0 GLIAC) jumped on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning to go ahead 1-0.

Northwood added two more runs in the third inning to go ahead 3-0. PNW had a prime chance to cut into the lead in the bottom half of the inning after getting the first two guys on base but the Timberwolves got three straight outs.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Pride finally got on the scoreboard as sophomore Kevin McCune (Munster, Ind./Andrean) ripped an RBI double to left center that scored junior Brett Veltema (Jenison, Mich./Jenison/Muskegon CC) from second.

NU got that run right back in the top of the ninth inning with two outs. PNW was down to their last chance in the bottom half of the last frame.

Juniors Ray Hansen (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita/South Suburban) and Hunter Thorn (Portage, Ind./Portage) drew walks and junior Anthony Agne (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) singled which loaded the bases with nobody out. Unfortunately for the Pride they were unable to rally any further as PNW recorded three straight outs to end the game.

Starting pitcher senior Kyle Flessner (Thomasboro, Ill./Rantoul Township) recorded the loss on the mound (0-1) for the Pride. The senior went six innings, scattering five hits, allowing three runs (one earned), issuing five walks and striking out six.

PNW (2-12, 0-1 GLIAC) returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, March 23 as the Pride resume their series against Northwood for a doubleheader (2-7 inning games) inside Dowling Park starting at 12 p.m. CT.
