CALEDONIA, Mich. -- The Purdue University Northwest baseball teams dropped their final two games of the series against Davenport in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday. The Panthers won the first game 13-0, before capturing the second, 18-9, at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.
GAME 2: DU 18, PNW 9
Brett Veltema (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) put PNW on the board with his RBI single up the middle which scored Hunter Thorn (Portage, Ind./Portage) to make it 1-0.
DU answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead 3-1. Both teams were scoreless in the next couple of innings before the Panthers added another one in the bottom of the fourth.
The Pride were able to put up a three-spot in the top of the fifth inning. Veltema continued his good day at the playe with a RBI single through the left side which scored Thorn. The inning continued when Danny Schneberger (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) cut it to 4-3 with his base hit through the right side scoring Ray Hilbrich (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) from second.
Jarrett Lopez (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) showed patience at the plate as he drew a walk with the bases-loaded which scored Veltema to tie the game at four in the fifth inning.
Davenport stormed back with eight runs in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead 12-4. PNW responded back with two runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Thorn ripped an RBI double in the left center cap, scoring Anthony Agne (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North). Schneberger made it 12-6 after his single right back up the middle that scored Thorn.
DU added two runs in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth inning to go ahead 18-6.
PNW added three runs in the top of the ninth inning to make it 18-9. Agne recorded a base-hit up the middle to score Hunter Ryan (Hebron, Ind./Hebron).
Hilbrich picked up his third hit of the day with an RBI single to center field which scored John Cory (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) from an error. Veltema drove in his third run of the day, scoring Agne which made it 18-9.
GAME 1: DU 13, PNW 0
Not much offense for the Pride in the opening game but PNW was able to record eight hits in the seven-inning game.
Davenport scored three runs in the first inning and one in the second frame to have an early 4-0 lead.
The game got out of hand in the fourth and fifth innings. The Panthers scored five runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
PNW left nine runners on base and went 0-10 with runners in scoring position.
Michael Woods (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) had two hits and Hilbrich also had a multi-hit game for the Pride which led PNW in the game.
PNW looks to bounce back Thursday, April 18 as the Pride start a four-game GLIAC series against Saginaw Valley State starting at 3 p.m. CT.
