HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Purdue University Northwest baseball team split both games of a doubleheader against Saginaw Valley State. The Pride won a resumed game from yesterday, 6-2, before falling in the second game 7-3.
GAME 1: PNW 6, SV 2
Saginaw started off the scoring in the top of the second inning with a sacrifice fly to go ahead 1-0.
PNW responded in the bottom half with a run of their own after Ray Hansen (Chicago, Ill./Saint Rita) reached on a fielder's choice which scored Kevin McCune (Munster, Ind./Andrean) after a Cardinal miscue.
The Cardinals responded and took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning after a double steal had the throw go to second.
The Pride took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth two runs in the frame. Michael Woods (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) grounded out which scored McCune then Hansen walked on ball four there was a passed ball which scored Anthony Agne (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North).
PNW added another run in the bottom of the fifth after Ray Hilbrich (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) scored on a wild pitch. After that point the game was halted until Friday due to the rain.
The game resumed on Saturday and McCune expanded the lead to 5-2 in the fifth with an RBI single which scored Brett Veltema (Jenison, Mich./Jenison). Hilbrich gave PNW a four-run cushion after grounding out in the eighth inning, scoring Hansen.
Kyle Flessner (Thomasboro, Ill./Rantoul Township) recorded the win (2-4) on the mound after going five innings, scattering only two hits and allowing two runs (one earned).
Justin Walter (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) shut the door the rest of the way for his first save of the season. The sophomore went the final four innings, did not allow a hit or a run, did not issue a walk and struck out four.
GAME 2: SV 7, PNW 3
SV jumped out early in this game with three runs in the opening frame after some miscues on the PNW defense. The Cardinals added one more in the second inning to go ahead 4-0.
PNW got one back in the fourth inning after Woods reached on a fielder's choice that scored Conner Hoffman (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) to make it 4-1.
The Cardinals got that run back in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 5-1.
The Pride got two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut it to 5-3. With two men on base and coming in to pitch hit was sophomore Jarrett Lopez (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central). Lopez ripped a two-RBI triple to the right field fence, scoring Hunter Ryan (Hebron, Ind./Hebron) and John Cory (Lowell, Ind./Lowell).
That was all the offense PNW got as the Pride were scoreless in the final two frames. SV was not done scoring, scoring one run in the eighth and ninth inning.
Junior Alex Batistatos (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) got charged with the loss (2-3), after going six innings, scattering seven hits, allowing five runs (one earned) and striking out three.
PNW and Saginaw Valley State conclude their series Saturday, April 20 as the two teams have a doubleheader starting at noon CT.
