INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Purdue University Northwest baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to the University of Indianapolis. The Greyhounds won the first game 13-11 in walk-off fashion then won the second 7-2 at Greyhounds Park on Tuesday.
GAME 1: UIndy 12, PNW 10
After an Austin Kordik (West Chicago, Ill./Community) drew a walk, Hunter Thorn (Portage, Ind./Portage) started the scoring off for the Pride with a two-run home run to right field which scored Kordik to go ahead 2-0. Ray Hilbrich (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) walked then Brett Veltema (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) came up and homered to right to extend the lead to 4-0 in the opening inning.
PNW added three runs in the top of the third inning to go ahead 7-0. Veltema and Anthony Agne (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) walked then Nick Albanese (Algonquin, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) connected on his second home run of the season over the rightfield fence.
Indianapolis responded with four runs in the bottom of the third to cut it to 7-4.
Couple innings later in the fifth inning, Veltema smacked his second home run of the game to right to go ahead 8-4. After a single by Agne, Albanese came up and hit his second home run of the game which scored Agne to go ahead 10-4.
The Greyhounds got one back in the bottom half of the inning after a Jake Perriera home run made it 10-5 PNW. UIndy added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 1.
Indianapolis rallied and walked off in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tyler Phillips hit a homerun to tie it at 10-all, couple batters later, Perriera came up and hit a two-run home run to win 12-10.
GAME 2: UIndy 8, PNW 2
This time it was Indianapolis getting on the scoreboard first, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning after a PNW miscue to go ahead 2-0. The Greyhounds added one more in the bottom of the second inning to go ahead 3-0.
Indianapolis put up a crooked number in the fourth inning to go ahead 7-0.
PNW got one back in the fifth inning after Thorn singled home John Cory (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) to make it 7-1. The Pride got another run in the sixth inning after Ray Hansen (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) ripped a single to right which scored Michael Woods (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove).
The Greyhounds added one more run in the seventh to go up 8-2. That score would hold for the final.
PNW returns to action Friday, April 26 as the Pride begins a four-game Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series against Grand Valley State starting at 2 p.m. CT.
