Pride Split with No. 6 Grand Valley State, Wednesday

HAMMOND, Ind. – The Purdue University Northwest softball team split Wednesday’s doubleheader with No.6 ranked Grand Valley State, falling in Game 1, 12-3 before earning the 7-6 victory in the nightcap.

GAME 1: GVSU 12, PNW 3

The Pride capitalized on some defensive mistakes from the Lakers in the first inning, after Heather O’Kelly (Worth, Ill./Shepard) and Zoee Anderson (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette) each scored to put the Pride ahead 2-0.

PNW would extend its lead in the bottom of the second inning, after a single from O’Kelly plated Amanda Noblett (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) to give the Black and Gold a 3-0 advantage.

The Lakers would get a run back in the top of the third, and answer back later in the game scoring 11 runs in the final three innings to give GVSU the 12-3 win.

GAME 2: PNW 7, GVSU 6

After GVSU scored two runs early on in the first inning, O’Kelly would get one of those runs back on a solo homer to centerfield to make it 2-1.

The Lakers would score two more runs in the top of the second, but the Pride would score runs in each of its next three innings to take the lead.

After the Pride cut it to 4-2 in the second, senior Kalyn Learnard (Fairmount, Ill./Catlin) evened the score at 4 runs apiece on a homerun that scored Anderson.

The Pride would score three more runs in the fourth to take its first lead of the game, 7-4.

GVSU would try and mount a comeback, but the Pride were able to battle through and defeat the No.6 Lakers, 7-6.

Courtney Blackwell (Whiting, Ind./Whiting) earned the win in the circle for the Pride throwing a complete game.

The Pride return to action Saturday, April 13, when they host Ferris State University in a doubleheader beginning at 1pm (CST) at Dowling Park.
