SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Purdue University Northwest freshman Darian Smith led the Pride women’s golf team with a Round 1 score of 94 at the Bethel Pilot Invitational held at Black Thorn Golf Club.

Smith (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) stood tied for 37th after 18 holes, as Purdue Northwest placed 11th with a  score of 458.

Freshman Lauren Bailey (Wanatah, Ind./Lacrosse) was next for PNW, two strokes back from Smith with a 96 in 44th place and classmate Meghan Spalla (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Pint) shot a 117, good for 54th.

Jenna Gericke (Highland, Ind./Highland) rounded out PNW’s scoring with a first-round 151.

St. Francis (Ind.) led the team field with a score of 315, Bethel’s A team was three strokes back with a 318 and Olivet Nazarene stood third with a 321.

ONU’s Kayla Owens led the field with a  first-round 74.

Purdue Northwest resumes action in Saturday’s final round beginning at 8 a.m.
