SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Freshman Lauren Bailey shaved 14 strokes off her Round 1 score to lead the Purdue University Northwest women’s golf team at Saturday’s final round of the Bethel Pilot Invitational.
Bailey (Wanatah, Ind./Lacrosse) recorded a Day 2 82 to finish with a two-day score of 178 to place tied for 34th overall in the field of 55 at South Bend’s Blackthorn Golf Club. Overall, the Pride improved by 35 strokes from its Day 1 round to shoot a 423 Saturday and finish with a 36-hole round score of 881 to place 11th in the team standings.
PNW freshman Darian Smith (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) recorded a 99 Saturday to finish with a two-day score of 193, good for tied for 46th place, and classmate Meaghan Spalla (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) cut 17 strokes off her Day 1 score to finish with a 36-hole round of 217 (53rd).
Jenna Gericke (Highland, Ind./Highland) rounded out PNW’s scoring with a 293.
St. Francis (Ind.) won the team title with a two-day score of 634, edging host and runner-up Bethel (639). Indiana Wesleyan was third with a 655.
USF’s Marissa Singer took medalist honors, shooting a 76 Saturday to finish with a 154.
PNW returns to action Monday when the Pride compete in the single-day Trinity Christian Fall Invite in Homewood, Ill.
