GRIFFITH, Ind. - The Purdue University Northwest women’s tennis team showed up in a big way on Sunday as the Pride defeated Midland, 7-0, at Match Point Tennis and Fitness Club, Sunday.
PNW won all three doubles matches with one being by default. Sophomore Lena van Bergen (Wesel, Germany) and freshman Patricia Dizon (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) won at No. 1 doubles against Midland’s Annie Allmand and Christina Villareal, 6-1.
Senior Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) and Carolina Yepez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) won at No. 2 doubles, 6-1. Freshman Kelli Canul (Munster, Ind./Munster) and sophomore Anna Wachowski (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) won by default at the No. 3 spot to give PNW a 1-0 lead going into singles competition where the Pride won five matches in straight sets and one by default.
Yepez won every game in each of her sets at No. 3 singles against Villarreal, 6-0, 6-0. Canul also swept her opponent in both of their games at No. 5 singles against Alyson Miller, 6-0, 6-0.
Dizon picked up the victory at No. 2 singles against Splickel after shutting out her opponent, 6-0, the freshman won the second set, 6-2. van Bergen won at No. 1 singles against Allmand, 6-3, 6-0.
Wachowski also picked up the victory at No. 4 singles in straight sets and shutting out her opponent in the second set, 6-3, 6-0. Basu-Chavez captured the match at No. 6 singles after winning by default.
PNW returns to action Saturday, March 30 as the Pride host Wayne State starting at 2 p.m. CT.
