Women's Tennis Set to Honor Basu-Chavez for Senior Day Friday

HAMMOND, Ind. & WESTVILLE, Ind. -- The Purdue University Northwest women's tennis team wraps up their season as the Pride host Senior Day and take on Concordia (Mich.) on Friday.

The Pride (4-14) takes on the Cardinals (6-7) at Match Point Tennis and Fitness Club starting at noon CT Friday.

PNW will honor four-year letter winner for the Pride women's tennis team Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) before the match. Basu-Chavez has a been a big part of the program since she began. The senior is the team captian and has won numberous matches during her time at PNW.

The Purdue Northwest women’s tennis team was defeated Saturday in a home GLIAC matchup against the Wayne State Warriors. The Pride lost 5-0 in singles and were knocked down 2-0 in doubles play.

Sophomore Lena van Bergen was taken down 6-0, 6-2 by Laura Cazacu of the Warriors. Freshman Patricia Dizon lost 6-1, 6-1 at the hands of WSU’s Brianna Douglas.

Munster native Kelli Canul fought hard but was ultimately defeated 6-0, 6-1 by Carla Jewell. Sophomore Anna Wachowski lost in the four slot 6-0, 6-1 to Stephanie Stamate.

Team captain Cynthia Basu-Chavez closes out the singles competition with a tough battle as she lost 6-4, 6-4 to Astrid Ciellza. In doubles, the combination of Van Bergen/Dizon lost 6-2 in a contest againt Ciellza/Stamate. Kelli Canul and Cynthia Basu-Chavez were unable to overcome the duo of Brianna Douglas and Carla Jewell 6-4.

Concordia is coming off a 7-2 victory against Muskingum College on March 26.
